Unfortunately the age of the “virus-free Mac” is over. A new type of Trojan Horse that mimics the ‘Flashback’ virus has been popping up on Mac’s recently. While this virus isn’t new, it is the first time that the virus has been so resilient. This Trojan attempts to access your bank accounts by injecting malicious code into Web Browsers and scanning usernames and passwords for banking websites. While this all seems very scary, there are simple fixes to this problem.
“This new variant of the Flashback Trojan horse uses three methods to infect Macs. The malware first tries to install itself using one of two Java vulnerabilities. If this is successful, users will be infected with no intervention. If these vulnerabilities are not available – if the Macs have Java up to date – then it attempts a third method of installation” according to Mac security blog Intego. “The applet displays a self-signed certificate, claiming to be issued by Apple. Most users won’t understand what this means, and click on Continue to allow the installation to continue.” So it seems like those of you with up-to-date Java and anti-virus software are safe.
